They Will Respect
My Son.
"This was the Lord's doing and
it is wonderful to see." Isn't it amazing how we
can so easily take all the wonderful things of life
for granted? The result is that life becomes boring
or difficult or oppressive for so many people. What
makes the difference in life is the quality of our thanksgiving
and praise of God and of one another. This week Christ
asks us to develop this ability in a special way. Make
it a week when criticism is banned especially from our
homes and community and when we go out of our way to
say thanks and to acknowledge the goodness of one another.
This is not easy because we are so used to criticising
one another either directly or through gossip. When
we are like that we are not living our faith in Christ
who only sees all that is good in each of us.

‘Day
for Life’
‘The
Lord is close to the broken-hearted;
he rescues those who are crushed in spirit’ Psalm
34
In 1995, Pope John Paul II proposed that a ‘Day
for Life’ be celebrated each year in every country,
to foster in individual consciences, in families and
in civil society, a recognition of the meaning and value
of human life at every stage and in every condition.
The Bishops in Ireland responded to this invitation
by announcing an annual celebration of Day for Life,
focussing of a different aspect each year, of the Church’s
awareness of the sacredness of human life. This year,
the chosen aspect is Mental Health and, in particular,
the needs of those affected by mental ill-health and
the needs, support and responsibilities of their families,
friends, carers, professional services and parish communities.
A Pastoral Letter issued by the Bishops of Ireland,
Scotland, England and Wales on Day for Life: Mental
Health can be accessed on www.catholicbishops.ie The
key message is that no-one is immune from mental ill-health
and, in the interest of the common good, every citizen
has a responsibility to promote, directly or otherwise,
the mental health of all the members of our society
and of our local communities.
