Sunday of the Year
Christian
Values
The rich young man said to Jesus:
'Good Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
Many people today live as if everything can be bought,
even God's favour. We might not think of this just in
terms of buying with money but with duty, with doing
what we have to and then God somehow is in our debt.
The way of Jesus is that eternal life can only be accomplished
through love - first of all God's love for us, which
is freely given, and then our love for God and for one
another. This way of love means giving up a lot of selfishness
and self-preoccupation just as the rich young man in
the Gospel had to give up his riches before he could
even begin to see what following Jesus was about. The
guarantee though is that it is more than worth all our
effort as this way of love brings happiness in this
life and eternal happiness with God.

Today is Emigrant
Sunday, a day when we are asked to remember and pray
for all those who, for whatever reason, have departed
our shores, through generations, to start fresh lives
in foreign lands. Emigration has touched all of us,
at some level. As we pray for our emigrants today, let
us remember in a special way all those for whom the
emigrant journey has been a difficult one, especially
those who have lost contact with their loved ones.
In Ireland today,
many arrive on our shores to start fresh lives in our
country. As a host country, may we make our immigrants
feel welcome and reach out to them in friendship and
support. In the words of the Holy Father, Pope Benedict
XVI, ‘Every migrant is a human person who,
as such, possesses fundamental, inalienable, rights
that must be respected by everyone and in every circumstance.’
MISSION
SUNDAY will be celebrated next Sunday. Our
financial support for the missions is channelled through
the Propagation of the Faith collection, which will
be taken up at all Masses next Sunday, as a second collection.
There is a special envelope in your envelope boxes for
it.
FORTY
HOURS Adoration will take place in St Mary’s,
Dregish, on Sunday 25th October, commencing with Exposition
of the Blessed Sacrament after 10.00am Mass and finishing
with a Holy Hour from 6.00 – 7.00pm.
New Religious Order in Derry Diocese
At the invitation
of Bishop Hegarty, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal
have set up a priory in our diocese. The first four
Friars arrived at the beginning of this month. They
are based at Long Tower, Derry. The Friars are distinctive
by their long grey habits. We welcome them to our diocese
and we wish them many blessings in their ministry. They
will work mainly with the marginalised and with youth.

ST FRANCIS
OF ASSISI PS: The Board of Governors and Staff
of the school wish to thank all who came along on Thursday
to the Official Blessing and dedication of our school
to the patronage of St Francis of Assisi. Thank you
to all who assisted in any way. Our sincere thanks to
Bishop Hegarty for making it a very special and memorable
occasion for our school and parish. Congratulations
to all the children of the school – you were a
credit to your school, your families and your parish.
Well done!
We were
especially surprised and delighted to be joined on the
day by two Friars from the new Community of Franciscan
Friars in our diocese, Br Eoin Paul and Br Patrick.
The Friars were highly impressed by the performance
of the children, depicting, so accurately, the life
of St Francis. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit to
the school and were highly interested in the historic
association of our parish with the Franciscans, dating
back to the 15th century when a Franciscan monastery
was established at Scarvaghern.
