First Sunday of Advent

Today is the beginning of the Season of Advent and the start of a new liturgical year, the year of Matthew’s Gospel (Cycle A). Advent is a time set aside by the Church for spiritual preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth and for the coming of Christ in glory at the end of time. It is a time of renewal, of quiet anticipation, hope and expectation. As we start our Advent journey today we are reminded in the Scripture readings to ‘stay awake’ and ‘stand ready’ because ‘you do not know the day when your master is coming.’
